(Before explaining my gender and pronouns, I'd like to let you know that just because I'm freely giving this information about myself away, it does not mean that you're entitled to it. I choose to give away this info because I want to teach as many people as possible about queer diversity. But not everyone can/wants to do this, and that's perfectly okay. It is their right to privacy. Please don't press people for information you're not entitled to.)

I am non-binary/genderqueer, and I use no pronouns (or they/them with permission).

What is "non-binary"?

Non-binary is an umbrella term for anyone whose gender isn't binary ("binary" referring to the 2 mainstream genders, man and woman).

There are many identities under the 'non-binary' umbrella, including agender, genderqueer, and gender fluid, but some people, prefer just being called non binary.

What is genderqueer?

Genderqueer (often shortened to GQ), is a non-binary gender identity. It has been defined many many different ways, but I personally interpret it as just another gender that isn't man or woman. I sometimes shorten this to just "queer", which is a label that I use to describe my sexuality too!

I don't know how else to explain it, I just feel queer.

What are they/them pronouns?

They/them pronouns in the singular form refers to a person of indeterminate gender, or someone whose gender doesn't fit the binary. Here's a link to a page that can further explain singular they/them pronouns and its history.

Here are some debunked misconceptions:

  • Being non-binary isn't just a combination of boy and girl.

  • Being transgender/non-binary is not a personality disorder.

  • Neo-pronouns are real, valid, and must be respected. They are not optional.

  • Not all non-binary people use they/them pronouns.

  • Being non-binary doesn't have a specific look or body type. Non-binary people can be masculine, feminine, androgynous, assigned male at birth (AMAB), assigned female at birth (AFAB), intersex, or more.

  • Non-binary people are not "middle stages" between the binary genders during transition. We are whole and complete gender identities.

  • Non-binary is not a “third gender”. It is an umbrella term that covers a lot of individual genders.
